Choi Kyung-Ju is a South Korean professional golfer, who is better known to golf fans in many countries as K.J. Choi. He is the most internationally successful Asian male golfer of all time. I happened to visit his house in the woodlands, Texas because I had part-time job about guiding and translation for Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), which is one of four major national South Korean television and radio networks. They were here in Houston on a special story about Choi.

Choi was born to a poor farming family in Wando, a remote island off South Korea’s southwest coast. He became interested in golf when one of his high school teachers recommended he try Jack Nicklaus’ lesson books and videos. Without the money to train properly, he drove his father’s tractor to the islands only golf range to practice. Nicknamed “Tank” for his strength and perseverance, he is noted for hitting more than 2000 practice balls every day even when he isn’t playing. He made his pro debut in 1994 and in August became the first Asian to reach the top 10 of the world in men’s golf rankings.

He carries three Taegeukgi (Korean flag) around with him on the field. There’s a small one on the heel of his right golf shoe and one right in the middle of his golf bag. Then there’s another one on the front of his caddie’s bib, which has “CHOI” printed on it. When I met Choi recently at his home, I asked him why he stuck Korean flags on his equipment. Choi answered,
“PGA tournaments are fierce when it comes to defending territory, so I want to keep reminding myself of my identity.”

Also, I asked him what the special know-how to do golf is. Choi answered,
“If you have a perfect balance in which the three elements of good mental power, golf skill, and healthy body, you can play golf very well. Also, if you pray to the All Mighty everyday, you can do it.” The last, you should be dedicated to your today’s goals and give your full concentration to every task at least eight hours in everyday."
